Photo Releaser

Summary

Photo Releaser is a tool to move your images from your camera to your hard drive. The images are automatically renamed in the format yyyy-mm-dd Description nn.ext, for example 2026-10-11 Texel 01.jpg. Because the date is stored in the file name, you can edit the image without losing the date. An advantage of this date format is that when you sort your files by file name, the images are in the correct order.

First click Read: Photo Releaser reads the files in the input folder and shows a table with one row per date and the number of files. The date is the date the photo was taken (from the EXIF data); without it, for example for a video, the file modification date is used. Enter a description for each date, for example the subject or the place where the photos were taken. Then click Start: the files are moved to the output folder, or renamed in the input folder if you clear "Move the files to an output folder". The file name is ended with a sequential number that starts at 1 for each date, in the order the photos were taken, with 2 to 4 digits depending on the number of files. Existing files are never overwritten.

Tip: After you release your photos with Photo Releaser, you can optionally use Filename Checker to perform advanced file name renaming. Filename Checker is also useful for renaming your current photo archives that probably don't have usable names.

Installation

If necessary, you will be prompted to install the required .NET Desktop Runtime when you launch the app. When you launch a newly released version, Windows may display a warning. If you see the message "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting." you can click "More info" and then "Run anyway".
